A Look at the Career and Works of Spain’s Legendary Painter, Diego Velasquez

So many of Spain’s great masters came about and became popular during its Golden Age and on this era, most Spanish painters were able to make their mark in different selections of art forms all over the world. It is also during that generation when one painter named Diego Velasquez became most famous and considered as the most sought after and highly respected painter. He was friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister as his paintings were widely admired by everyone and in every artwork he made, Velasquez displayed his skill and style.
Born in a noble family back in June 5, 1599 and the first chile in a brood of six, Diego Velasquez displayed mush talent as a young artist at a very early age. As early as eleven years old he started to gain knowledge of painting and became an apprentice of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen he was certified by the painters’ guild to be a exceptional artist which allowed him to paint as a professional. He became the husband of Pacheco’s daughter and continued his paintings that have been his means to support his family; his themes are mostly religious and still life paintings of tavern pieces and he was able to sell his paintings and earned a lot of money which he used to buy a comfortable house for them and another house to be rented out.
Many of the exceptional pieces were produced by Diego Velasquez, which made him one of the country’s highly influential people and most acclaimed painter. When he met Marques de Spinola, Velasquez produced an artwork titled Surrender of Breda which tells the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the piece, he was stricken with awe and amazement and cannot contemplate how amazing was Velasquez’ ability to express and capture emotions through the realism of his portraits. However, Diego will continue to paint and he would produce an artwork that would be more famous and more brilliant than the Surrender of Breda, he will be widely known for his piece called Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; The painting is said to be the most sought after piece in the world and until now most people visit Spain just to see this wonderful work of art.
Diego Velasquez is truly an exceptional artist, his paintings up to this generation are being studied and analyzed; he is really one of Spain’s great masters of painting.
