What To Know about Cuckoo Clock
The cuckoo clock immediately became an item that every home must have. This is due to the unusual design that a black forest cuckoo clock possesses. Antique wall clocks are long time favorites, because a decorative wall clock makes a striking statement about its owner’s appreciation for the finer things in life. For all age groups the black forest cuckoo clock becomes a family heirloom and it brings fortune.
The clock makers who started to produce well crafted black forest cuckoo clock made Germany’s black forest suddenly popular during the 17th century. Building beautiful things out of wood was something specific for the people who lived in the mountains of the black forest. When these skilled people teamed up with local citizens who had the required mathematical knowledge, the black forest cuckoo clock was made. None of them knew that a wooden decorative wall clock or kitchen wall clock would become one of the prestigious possessions of future generations.
Franz Anton Ketterer is credited with the creation of the first cuckoo clock around 1730. He is known as the person who used a bellows to recreate the sound of a cuckoo, hence, the black forest cuckoo clock.
The cuckoo clock like most other antique wall clocks have a square face with watercolor painting. Tje decorations on the black forest cuckoo clock became more advanced over time. For instance, as the cuckoo clock evolved, the wings and mouth became movable and real feathers were incorporated into the bird’s body. So there is no logic in displaying it as a kitchen wall clock.
The Triberg and Neustadt districts were occupied by some 680 clock makers and around 580 decorative wall clock dealers by early 1800s. As most farms were covered with snow in winter; clocks were usually made during that time. In the cold winter season, those who created black forest cuckoo clocks by hand had the indoor time to do their work without being disturbed. Clock sellers will get an opportunity to exhibit and sell their fine cuckoo clocks, they have made painstakingly, after the winter season is over.
