Zebrawood comes from the species Microberlina brazzavillensis and goes by several different names: African Zebrawood, Allenele, Amouk, and Zingana. The diameter of the tree ranges from 48” to 60” and mostly grows on banks of rivers.
The heartwood is a very pale gold in color with slim black and brown stripes. The sapwood too is very pale in color and the wood has a very coarse texture. The wood resists preservative treatment so it easily succumbs to insects.
It is very difficult to cut or carve this wood as its grains are interlocked tightly and very closely defined. However, it is a very beautiful wood that reveals exciting colors and patterns when quartersawn. It also does not dry easily and exudes a rather foul odor when it is cut.
Extra care has to be taken when handling the Zebrawood veneer as it is quite fragile. But it can be worked fairly well with the use of hand and power tools. For a smooth machine finish, it would be best to use a belt sander.
