The Differences Between Spanners And Wrenches – ToolsRUs
Spanners and wrenches are similar in overall function but different, and they come in many shapes and sizes, and are designed for specific jobs. Depending on the job, it is necessary to have the right tool on hand to do it effectively and without causing any damage. An improperly fitting tool will be ineffective at best or ruin the flats of the nut or bolt at worst. Spanners may be of fixed size or adjustable. For each specifically sized nut and bolt head, there is the correct spanner. By contrast, adjustable wrenches and spanners may fit a range of nut, bolt and fastener sizes.

For both types of tools, quality construction is a must. Chrome vanadium or carbon-forged steel tools are best, for they are durable and will supply the torque necessary for most fastening applications. The open-ended spanner is the most common. This type of spanner consists of a shaft with one or two working ends. Double-ended spanners make the most sense, for you get two different sizes with one tool. To let you reach hard-to-reach nuts, the heads are offset at about a 15-degree angle. This is especially useful while working in cramped spaces.
Ring spanners feature enclosed heads with either 6 or 12 interior points. 12-point spanners can fasten onto hex or square bolts, making them more versatile. They are also more prone to ruining a nut by rounding its flats, whereas a 6-point spanner fits a hex nut point to point. You get more leverage with 6-point tools, but the size of the spanner and the size of nut must match. Although somewhat limited as far as access, ring spanners are stronger than open-ended spanners. Among the other types available are bulldog, box, tap, offset ring, split ring and adjustable spanners.
Similarly, wrenches are designed to turn, tighten or loosen pipe as well as fasten nuts and bolts. Unlike adjustable spanners, a pipe wrench has serrated jaws to get a better grip on a pipe. Some of the other types of pipe-turning tools are mole, strap, footprint and Stilson wrenches. They are designed to provide a varying amount of pressure or fit pipes of different diameter. Another type of wrench is called a torque wrench, and its purpose is to tighten fasteners to very precise specs. Torque wrenches are most commonly used by mechanics. While they all tighten or loosen nuts, bolts, fasteners or hardware such as pipes, spanners and wrenches are similar, but each is used for a very specific purpose.
