How To Enhance Your Bedroom Decor By Sewing A Straight Line
If you have the capacity to sew a straight line, then you have the skills to redecorate your bedroom. Just by finding some great fabric you can transform your bedroom into an oasis. You can construct a number of bedroom furnishings by just sewing a straight line. Opt for patterns and fabrics that go well together, and then produce your own unique look with drapes and bedding.
Curtains with Straight Lines.
Get started by measuring your windows. To decide how long your curtains should be, measure from the curtain rod to the floor, and then add the depth of the pocket plus ½ inch and the hem plus ½ inch. To find out how wide you want the fabric to be, measure the width of your windows and then add an extra six inches; this will make one curtain panel. You will need two panels for the window. As you choose your fabric, notice the direction of the print on the fabric, and make sure that it will orient in the room correctly.
You must first hem the sides of each panel. With the right side facing down fold ½ inch of fabric towards you and iron. Then fold 1 and ½ inches of fabric towards you to make the hem and iron in place. Now sew a straight line down each edge of each panel to hem. Fold over 1/2 inch on the top edge and iron, and then fold over a pocket for the curtain rod. Next iron and sew another straight line on each panel. Move to the bottom hem and fold over ½ inch and iron, and then fold over the width of the hem and iron again. After you sew a straight line across the lower hem of each panel, your curtain panels are completed. It is really that simple.
Straight Line Table Skirt.
Cover your table by the bed with a table skirt for a dressy look. Find a fabric that complements the curtains that you just completed. You can also use a table skirt to hide storage underneath and give your room a clutter free look. Merely cut the fabric to the appropriate size, turn under the hem, and then sew.
Straight Line Bed Skirting.
You can dress up your bed with a bedskirt and hide under bed storage bins and your unsightly box spring mattress. When constructing the bedskirt, measure the length and width of your bed, and then add an additional inch on either side. Use an old flat sheet to make the base of the skirt. Now measure from the floor to the top of the box spring in order to get the height of the bedskirt and then add an surplus inch for hemming. You need to cut three lengths in your bed skirting: one each for the right side, left side, and the foot of the bed; be certain to leave a 1-inch seam to join the pieces.
Now sew the three pieces together and then fold under the hem. Iron and sew the hem. Affix the bedskirt to a flat sheet, being cautious to line up the corner seams with the corners of the sheet. You can invariably choose to leave the bed skirt panels open, and then hem all sides prior to attaching.
